Retain the account context
Identify the period and date of the information you are using for the balance. Keep any labels for tax, penalty, interest, or payments as the source presents them. If a figure is disputed or a transaction cannot be reconciled, preserve the supporting evidence in a separate question note. A budget should not silently settle that accuracy issue. Ask which part of the balance is understood and which amount or transaction still needs explanation.
Review the arrangement using current information
IRS payment-agreement guidance explains options whose conditions and fees can depend on the request and account. Ask what periods would be included and which obligations remain. Use financial records with coverage dates and an explanation of estimates or changes in circumstances. Clarify proposed assistance before authorizing work. A draft payment figure can support a realistic affordability question, but it does not determine that a specific amount is acceptable or that an arrangement has already been approved for the account.
